Guide 5: Becoming a Wizard — Iron’s Spells ‘n Spellbooks

The pack’s magic path. No research trees or arcane journals — you find spells as loot, socket them into a spellbook, and blast things. Progression is loot-driven, which means wizards level up by exploring and fighting, and it scales all the way to endgame boss magic.

The core loop

  1. Find spell scrolls in dungeon loot, from casting mobs, and from bosses. Every scroll is a spell at a specific level.
  2. Socket scrolls into a spellbook using the Inscription Table. Books have limited slots; better books = more slots and stat bonuses.
  3. Equip the spellbook (it gets its own slot alongside your gear — check the Curios slots in your inventory).
  4. Cast: select a spell (spell wheel / keybind — check Controls once, it’s worth it) and hold to cast. Spells cost mana, which regenerates and grows with your gear and level.

The schools

Spells come in schools, each with a personality and its own boss-tier drops:

  • Fire / Ice / Lightning — the elemental damage cores; ice slows, lightning chains.
  • Evocation — force magic: missiles, shields, fangs. Reliable bread and butter.
  • Ender — mobility and trickery: teleports, magic arrows. Take a teleport spell the moment you find one.
  • Holy — healing and support; the multiplayer-friendly school (heal your tank mid-bossfight).
  • Blood — damage that costs/steals health; high risk, high style.
  • Nature — poison, roots, and sustain.
  • Eldritch — the hidden endgame school; its spells come from the mod’s own high-end content.

You are not locked into a school — your “class” is whatever scrolls you’ve found. Generalists do fine; school-focused gear rewards specialists.

Gear that makes a mage

  • Mage armor (tiers from apprentice robes up through boss-tier sets) trades physical defense for mana, cast speed, and spell power. A wizard in netherite is wasting slots; a wizard in robes hits harder.
  • Casting-stat trinkets in Curios slots (mana rings, cast-speed charms) — the Artifacts/Relics mods and Iron’s own trinkets both feed this build.
  • Upgrade Orbs let you push gear further; Arcane Essence + Ink tiers (common → legendary) gate crafting and inscribing higher-level spells.
  • The Scroll Forge lets you craft scrolls from paper, ink of the right tier, and a school focus — so once you’ve got an ink economy going you’re not purely at loot’s mercy.

Leveling the practical way

  • Early: buy/find apprentice gear, run village and surface dungeons for common scrolls. A level-1 Magic Missile or Firebolt carries the early game. Watch your mana bar discipline — running dry mid-fight is the classic new-wizard death.
  • Mid: hunt the mod’s own structures (pillager-mage towers, catacombs) and the pack’s dungeon mods (YUNG’s, Dungeons Arise) — their loot tables are full of scrolls and ink. Upgrade your book the moment slots run out; slots > small stat gains.
  • Late: the crossover addons are the point of this pack: Cataclysm: Spellbooks and Ice and Fire: Spellbooks turn L_Ender’s Cataclysm boss materials and dragon parts into spellbooks and spells that rival tech-mod endgame. Killing dragons as a wizard, for wizard loot is the fantasy and it’s real here.

Fighting as a mage (quick tactics)

  • Open with control (ice slow, roots), then burn damage spells; keep one mobility spell (teleport/ascent) bound for panic.
  • Mobs from this mod cast at you too — casting mobs telegraph with a glow and sound; interrupt or dodge, don’t tank.
  • In group boss fights, one Holy-school player multiplies the whole team’s survivability. Someone should take one for the team.
  • Meal buffs stack with everything (Guide 2). A fed wizard is a live wizard.

Starter goals

  • First spellbook + 2–3 common scrolls inscribed
  • Full apprentice mage armor
  • A mobility spell bound and practiced
  • Scroll Forge + ink production
  • Boss-tier spellbook from the Cataclysm/Ice & Fire addons
