Guide 8: The Explorer’s Atlas
Exploration is this pack’s biggest single content pool: two biome mods, five hidden cave worlds, a bee dimension, an under-Deep-Dark, and thousands of structures. This is the “what’s out there and how do I find it” guide.
Your tools
- Nature’s Compass — craft it, select any biome (vanilla or modded), and it points the way. This is how you find that one Biomes O’ Plenty biome you want to live in.
- Explorer’s Compass — the same for structures. Want a Dungeons Arise sky castle or a Cataclysm pyramid? Search, lock, walk.
- Xaero’s Map — press the new-waypoint key at anything interesting the moment you see it. Future you, trying to re-find that dungeon, will be grateful.
- Waystones — activate every one you pass, no exceptions. They’re free fast-travel nodes and they’re everywhere (villages, structures, dungeons).
- Lootr chests are per-player (the sparkly blue ones): a looted dungeon is only looted by you. Explore places your friends already “cleared.”
The overworld
- ~100 new biomes from Biomes O’ Plenty + Oh The Biomes We’ve Gone — from cherry groves to dead swamps to skylands. Base-hunting is content; use Nature’s Compass when you know what you want.
- Villages are worth visiting again: ChoiceTheorem’s overhauled villages are biome-specific and huge, with More Villagers professions, Guard Villagers protection, and waystones in the plaza.
- Structure density is high: YUNG’s better mineshafts/strongholds/dungeons underground, When Dungeons Arise megastructures on the surface (sky castles, pirate fleets, monasteries), Dungeon Crawl multi-floor dungeons below, Graveyard sites at night, Better Archeology dig sites to brush through, and Treasure2 buried chests. When in doubt: climb a hill, look for silhouettes.
- Seasons change the map (Serene Seasons): that lake freezes in winter, that berry biome peaks in autumn. Some crops and fish are seasonal — even the calendar is exploration content.
Alex’s Caves: five hidden worlds underground
The pack’s crown jewel of exploration. Five rare, enormous cave biomes, each effectively a mini-dimension. You find them via cave maps looted from underground cabins (watch for campsite-like rooms while caving) — each map leads to one specific biome:
- Magnetic Caves — magnetized industrial caverns; magnet-tech resources.
- Primordial Caves — a lost world with actual dinosaurs. Tame-your-own-raptor territory.
- Toxic Caves — irradiated waste with hazmat gear as the prize (and requirement).
- Abyssal Chasm — a drowned trench with deep-sea horrors and submarine tech.
- Candy Cavern — exactly what it sounds like, and weirder than it sounds.
Each has exclusive blocks, mobs, gear, and a resident apex threat. Bring supplies for an expedition, not a stroll — and a waystone.
Other dimensions & depths
- The Bumblezone — throw an ender pearl at a beehive and get sucked into a honeycomb dimension of giant bees. Bee-themed gear, the Queen’s trading room, and one of the pack’s most charming areas.
- Deeper and Darker: the Otherside — beyond the Deep Dark’s ancient cities lies a portal to the Otherside. Sculk-tier gear and the pack’s spookiest biome set. Warden-dodging skills required first (see Guide 7).
- The End & Nether — YUNG’s Better Nether Fortresses and Better End Island rework the classics; Cataclysm plants its endgame dungeons in both (Burning Arena, Ruined Citadel).
Your first three expeditions, in order
- The surface loop (day 3–7 gear): pick a direction, hit every village and surface structure for a full day’s walk, activating waystones and opening Lootr chests as you go. Goal: come home with a bag of Apotheosis loot, three+ waystones on your network, and at least one artifact.
- The deep dig (iron/diamond gear): proper caving trip through YUNG’s caves and mineshafts. You’re looking for two things — an underground cabin (grab every cave map you see) and a spawner worth silk-touching. Mark both on the map even if you can’t use them yet.
- Your first cave map (enchanted diamond, meals, backup gear in a chest at home): follow a cave map to whichever Alex’s Caves biome it shows. Place a waystone at the entrance before going in. This is the trip that graduates you from tourist to explorer — and its loot funds whichever path (tech/magic/combat) you’re building.
After that, you’re qualified for everything else on this page: the Bumblezone, the megadungeons, and eventually the Otherside.
